Poetry Session By Prof. Uday Chatterjee

Stress Corrosion to Life, Love & Reflections: Professional Pursuit to Poetry!

Dr. Uday Kumar Chatterjee, a professor of Metallurgy Department at the Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur (India), who is currently lecturing in the States, rendered his poetry to a large gathering of IIT Kharagpur Alumni of Southern California(IIT KGP-AASC). Dr. Chatterjee professes, that while his profession has been the development and application of the technology of Metallurgy over three decades, his addiction has been to Bengali poetry. In his own words, Dr. Chatterjee said, " Stress corrosion is my "pesha" and poetry is my "nesha". It is heartening that I find so many you share my "nesha".

Born and raised in the land of West Bengal that produced India's only Nobel Laureate Rabindranath Tagore, Dr. Chatterjee gave a lively session on "Pleasures of Bengali Poetry" from Vaishnav period to contemporary with a multi-media presentation. A regular contributor to the leading Bengali literature magazine "Desh", he has authored two books in 1989 and 1997, namely "Amar Chhaya-ra (My Shadows)" and "Sob Phuli Suryamukhi (All Flowers are Sunflowers)". The title poem of his second book is published in "Poetry Today" in the USA. His 110 poems in the two publications are philosophical renderings of life, love and reflections.

A professor, a former head of department of Metallurgy and a member of the board of Governors of IITs', Dr. Chatterjee addressed the Thermec 2000 Conference in Las Vegas on the subject of corrosion in metals last week. An eminent authority in the area of corrosion of metals, Dr. Chatterjee has carried out post-doctoral research at the Leningrad Polytechnic Institute as well as at Max Planck Institute in Germany and published nearly 50 technical papers in journals around the world. He presented a paper to the famous Colorado School of Mines in Golden, Colorado and is the architect of a potential strategic research collaboration between the school and the IITs' under the auspices of the IIT KGP Alumni Association of Southern California. Dr. Chatterjee's visit was organized by Devendra Mishra of IIT KGP-AASC.

In the last two decades America has reveled in the unprecedented wealth creation, spear headed by IIT graduates, building Silicon Valleys across the country. It is therefore not surprising that the idyllic, sylvan setting of the IIT campus inspired the poet in Dr. Chatterjee to let his creativity run free while he attempted to understand the phenomena of cracks caused by stress in metals.
